The weather is getting warmer and that means it’s time to spend more time outdoors. There are a lot of great activities that you can do with kids, whether you’re babysitting or trying to find some new activities to do with your own. With the right outdoor gear, any outdoor setting can be made into a fun adventure for you and the kids.
Go for a Hike
Depending on where you live, there may be a variety of nature trails. You can ask a local, look online, check in with the ranger station, or grab a map. This will help you to show your kids more about how to navigate the trail. The terrain might be as smooth as can be or a little rugged. Either way, it’s a great workout and you get to breathe in the fresh air the whole time.
Playing catch is one of the easiest forms of outdoor activity. It can be done in a small backyard, an open field, or in your driveway making it a quick activity you can do anytime or anywhere. It also has great benefits for your child’s hand eye coordination and early athletic development. The ball you choose might depend upon their age as well as their skill level. If they’re not very coordinated yet, you might want to go with a large beach ball. Otherwise, you can try softballs or even baseballs.
Yoga in the Park
Grab a yoga mat and head to a park or a large area of grass. This is a great way to help everyone stretch and flex. Plus, you will find it entertaining to watch your kids get into a downward facing dog and cobra asana. You might want to check with your community – many are offering yoga in the park where it’s a bit more organized than what you would do on your own.
Go on a Scavenger Hunt
What kid doesn’t love to go on a good ‘ol scavenger hunt? This is something you can plan ahead of time giving you the ability to help your kids find clues during the scavenger hunt. Give them a list and let them find everything that’s on there. If you can, involve some of the other kids in the neighborhood and the parents can help make the scavenger hunt even more impressive than what you would do on your own.
Set Up a Relay
A little competition never hurt anyone! You can set up a fun relay for all of your kids and their friends. This is something where they can compete individually or in teams, depending upon how many kids you have. Tug-a-war, sack races, three-legged races, and more can be incorporated into a tournament style competition with a fun prize for the winning team at the end.
Whatever you do, spending time outdoors with your kid’s is a fun and memorable part of parenthood. Be a kid again, get creative and use your imagination or let them think of a new activity for you to do. The possibilities are endless and they don’t come at great expense.
